Quick Guide to Financial Wellbeing
3 simple steps that work for most people to get onto a path of success.
Finance is about making your salary go further.
Step 1: Pay off high-interest-rate debt
Credit cards and most other debt, other than a low-cost home mortgage, come with onerous interest rates that force you to pay more for things. A $500 item may cost much more than $500 if the purchase is paid in installments or through credit.
Get to a point where you can pay for things up front and pay off credit cards in full each month before interest is accrued. It may require some frugal living for a bit, but once you stop paying more for things because of the interest burden, you can upgrade your lifestyle in the long run.
Once all high-interest-rate debt is paid off and you have a rainy-day fund (enough to cover a few months’ expenses), it is time to get your money working for you.
Step 2: Open a Roth IRA (and get it invested)
Roth IRAs allow your money to grow tax free. It is a highly advantageous account type and is available to everyone (with certain income limitations).
Once capital is in the Roth IRA, it grows tax free.
- No taxes on capital gains
- No taxes on earned interest
- No taxes on dividends
Keep your money and the money that grows from your money.
Step 3: Make recurring contributions to your Roth IRA
The current annual contribution limit is $7,000, or $8,000 for those 50 and older. Set up recurring monthly or annual contributions to ensure that you get as close to the contribution limit as you can.
With regular contributions and compounding the growth of the capital that is already there, the value can grow substantially over time. Here is our compounding calculator tool to visualize the trajectory.
All of this can be done on your own. We can also do it on your behalf. Learn how to work with us here.
